Safety is a top priority for theater drives. For example, brake motors are often fitted with double brakes or emergency drives are available to ensure the safety of the actors on stage at all times. For the emergency drive of a lifting podium in an Austrian opera house, we produced a tailor-made drive: a three-phase motor with a flywheel.
In order to achieve a smooth start and stop of the podium, it was necessary to equip the drive motor with a flywheel. The steel flywheel was manufactured according to the customer’s specifications in our workshop at the Stockerau site and mounted on a standard three-phase AC motor from our own MOLL-MOTOR brand. This was an unventilated 8-pole motor with an asynchronous speed of 680 rpm. The flywheel was attached to the B-side shaft of the rotor; the flywheel and rotor were then balanced together on the in-house balancing machine to guarantee smooth running without vibrations. In addition, an opener temperature monitor was installed in the winding to prevent the motor from overheating.
A normally closed temperature monitor is a bi-metal switch that is installed in the motor winding.
If the winding reaches a certain temperature, e.g. 150°C, the switch opens and interrupts the contact. This gives the control system the signal to switch off the motor before it overheats.
Delivering customized drive technology quickly and on time, as in the example above from the theater industry, requires a combination of several factors:
- Experience and knowledge: This includes both the know-how of which components can be combined with which (dimensions, performance, …), as well as the manual implementation in the workshop.
- Communication: Precise consultation with the customer and internal departments is essential. Customer requirements must be defined, current capacities for the implementation of the modification are coordinated with the workshop and stock levels and the delivery time to the customer are checked.
- Availability of goods: In order to be able to carry out modifications quickly, a wide range of products is required – either in stock on site or through rapid procurement from suppliers. We know which goods are frequently required thanks to our decades of experience; adjustments are constantly made in purchasing in order to meet current requirements, e.g. the IE4 efficiency directive.
- Modification options: In our in-house workshop, we need the right tools and machines as well as skilled workers to carry out the modifications.
- Logistics: To ensure that the customer receives the goods punctually at the desired delivery location, consultation and coordination with the respective forwarding agent is important. Reliable partners and practical experience in the logistics sector contribute to success.
