Stricter EU requirements: What has changed
The EU regulation on ecodesign requirements for electric motors is tightened approximately every two years. This is based on the definition of efficiency values for classes IE1, IE2, IE3 and IE4. We have published an overview of which services have been affected by which regulation since July 1, 2023 here: The evolution of energy efficiency classes in the EU.
In addition to the major changes in the classification of efficiency classes, there are also minor adjustments. For example, when switching from IE1 to IE2, not only the efficiency itself was newly regulated, but the test methods were also refined. Manufacturers must use more precise measurement methods and provide a detailed breakdown of efficiency losses. Most recently, additional regulations were issued that stipulate how these losses must be documented on the electric motor. It is therefore not enough for a motor to meet the technical requirements – even an incompletely printed nameplate can be considered as a violation of the efficiency regulations.
Elimination of exemptions: Which motors are affected
Over the years, there have been numerous special regulations for certain motors where operational safety was more important than efficiency. However, these exemptions are gradually being abolished. The following have recently been affected:
- Brake motors
- Motors for extreme ambient temperatures
- Smaller single-phase motors
If you have been purchasing the same motor model for your machines for years, you should check whether it still meets the legal requirements. If a motor fails an official inspection, it may no longer be put into circulation with immediate effect. The risk of a sudden delivery failure exists even if the product is in stock at the supplier.
Legal certainty through advice: How MOLL-MOTOR provides support
At MOLL-MOTOR, keeping an eye on regulatory developments is a top priority. The management team analyzes new requirements as early as the draft stage and provides regular, targeted training to the sales department in order to inform customers reliably and in time. This enables mechanical engineering companies to act in good time and ensure compliance by the right date instead of having to make expensive adjustments afterwards.
