Can it be a little smaller? Shaded-pole geared motors in mechanical engineering

Industrial and commercial machines often have several drives. A powerful main drive is flanked by smaller auxiliary drives. These control flaps, ensure cleaning, feed and discharge of material and much more. Auxiliary drives are often technically undemanding and require little power with short duty cycles. Nevertheless, a failure can bring operations to a standstill.

Difference to three-phase squirrel cage motors

Shaded-pole motors are ideal for long-life applications. In contrast to larger motors, their copper winding, with which the magnetic field is generated, is a single, ring-shaped coil. This means that there are no steps in the manufacturing process that put a strain on the copper wire. They also do not require any wearing parts, as they are asynchronous motors in which the rotary motion is generated by magnetic induction. These small motors are therefore completely maintenance-free.

No designer wants to change the main function just to make room for a secondary drive. If there is little space available, shaded-pole geared motors are ideal, in which the shaded-pole motor is combined with a flat gearbox. The axis from which the rotary movement is taken can be designed as a short hollow shaft. The narrow, flat drive is usually mounted on a shaft and the motor part is positioned in the direction in which it is least disruptive.

Power and output speed

Shaded-pole geared motors are usually used when connected loads of less than 0.15 kW are required; outputs of 35W to 55W are particularly common. In order to generate the necessary torque for the application, a high gear reduction ratio is usually used. The output speed is usually between 3 and 10 revolutions per minute; if necessary, 30 rpm can easily be achieved.

Application areas of the motors

The areas of application for shaded-pole motors are diverse. They are installed inside pellet heaters, barrier systems or gaming machines, they move packaging machines, medical devices and barbecue skewers alike. For more than 20 years, MOLL-MOTOR has been relying on a reliable manufacturer for this product, who has already supplied us with more than 500,000 of these drives, which are in reliable service throughout Austria and Europe. We supply most of them to major customers, who adapt the shaft design and cable connection precisely to their requirements. Supplying the small motors with a ready-made cable/plug combination saves our customers time during installation.
