Technical quality – more than just power and speed
1. Degree of protection (IP protection class):
A high-quality electric motor is not only powerful, but also optimally protected against external influences such as dust and moisture. The IP protection class provides the decisive indication here:
– For three-phase motors, at least IP55 is required, for AC motors it may also be IP54.
– IP44 is a warning signal: here there is no protection against dust, which considerably shortens the service life.
2. Insulation class – the protection for the winding:
The insulation class indicates the temperatures the motor winding can withstand. The standard is F (155°C) or F(B), which means that the motor is only loaded up to 130°C in normal operation. If this information is missing or only a lower iso-class (e.g. E or B) is specified, caution is advised: Such motors are susceptible to winding damage and failure if overloaded.
3. Operating mode – equipped for continuous duty:
A reliable motor should be designed for continuous duty (S1). Other rated operating modes such as S2 (short-time operation) or S3 (intermittent duty) indicate that the motor may lose power or even fail during longer operating times.
4. Ambient temperature – heat resistance counts:
A solid motor can withstand ambient temperatures of up to 40°C. If this information is missing, it is possible that the motor will overheat and fail at high temperatures.
5. Conformity to standards – IEC/EN 60034 is mandatory:
An asynchronous motor should be built in accordance with IEC/EN 60034 to ensure that it can be fitted accurately and that no vibrations or damage are caused by incorrect dimensions.
6. Energy efficiency – observe legal requirements:
Strict efficiency regulations have been in force in Europe for years. A modern motor should meet at least efficiency class IE3, and IE2 is also permissible for lower outputs. If this information is missing or outdated designations such as IE1 or EFF2 appear, this indicates inferior, outdated technology that no longer meets European standards.
Commercial quality – trust is a must
1. Check imprint and company headquarters:
A provider without an imprint is a clear warning signal. Even with seemingly European domains (.de, .at), it is worth checking the company’s registered office. Shipping from low-wage countries or a lack of complaint options can be expensive in the event of problems.
2. Brand identity and reliability:
Make sure that the motor and supplier are listed under the same name. Companies that appear with “sounding names” but offer no substance behind them are often difficult to grasp and hard to contact in the event of complaints.
3. Long-term market presence:
Go for providers that have been established on the market for many years. Such companies not only offer high-quality motors, but also guarantee a long-term supply of spare parts and reliable service.
